Administrative Systems

Edgar is short for Electronic Data Gathering and Reporting. It is commonly known around campus as "Web Applications" or "Web Apps". While Esther is a "self_service" system one uses on their own behalf, Edgar is a system by which employees can interact with the University's core administrative systems & processes as well as Banner. In addition, Edgar houses a set of data stores that provide authorized users with access to Banner financial, student, human resources and related administrative information. Query and reporting on the information is available via Edgar's web interface as well as Hyperion.

Getting an Edgar account

You will need an Edgar account to get access to the Edgar Web Applications. To get an account, simply print and complete a security agreement (or complete the application online and print it), have it signed by your department administrator and then return the agreement to Administrative Systems at Administrative Systems User Security MS-97. If you have any questions about how to fill out the application, just contact us at admsys@rice.edu. The agreement and data access requested is routed through the Controller, Human Resources, Registrar and/or other offices as appropriate for approval.

PI's Please Note: With this security agreement a PI's account will be set up with Banner access to his/her Research funds along with a base set of Edgar's Web Applications which include financial transactions, budget information, payroll and labor encumbrances.

Logging into Edgar

To log into the Edgar Web Applications, you must be on a Rice network (have a Rice IP address). This means that you must be on Rice campus OR be logged in through a VPN giving you a Rice IP address.

Passwords expire

For security reasons, your Edgar password will expire every 90 days.

Your password must be

8 characters, contain 1 number, must begin with a letter, cannot include spaces, hypens or @ but can include $, or _(underscore) symbols.
